The Power of Creating

When we think about healing, we often think about the big milestones: leaving an abusive or exploitive situation, finding a safe place to live, securing employment, or reaching an important personal goal.

However, healing can also happen in the smaller moments.

Through Purple Lotus, our survivors have the opportunity to create handmade items, such as bookmarks, that are sold through our social enterprise.

While a bookmark may seem like a simple item, there is something powerful about creating something with your own hands and seeing it become something that someone else will enjoy. For a survivor who has had so many choices taken away from her, being able to make something, contribute to something meaningful, and see the value in her own work can be an important part of rebuilding confidence.

Sometimes, those small moments are reminders of how far a survivor has come. A new skill can become a new interest. A finished product can become a moment of pride. A creative activity can become a chance to simply enjoy something again.

This is one of the reasons we are excited about our upcoming Bluebird & Bookmarks fundraiser. On October 6th, our community will have the opportunity to create bookmarks just as our survivors do. By participating, you’ll not only enjoy a fun evening with others, but you’ll also experience a small part of something that is meaningful to the women we serve.

Sometimes, creating something is about more than the finished product. It can be about discovering your abilities, finding confidence, and realizing that there is still so much you can create for your future.
